It's not a secret that the driver's license from the UK, Europe or from the US are considered valid on the territory of Thailand. But on January 1, 2014 from the driver will be fined 1,000 Baht, if he stay in Thailand longer than 3 month and no have Thai drivers license. That mean, if you come for permanent resident and you have a student, working or any other non-tourist visa, you need to obtain a local driver's license.

There are three kinds of rights to driving in Thailand for foreigners:
1. Temporary rights. Valid for 1 year. Upon expiration, you can change the constant, provided that you do not have a tourist visa.

DAY 1
1. Get the Residence Certificate. You go to the office of the Immigration Police in Jomtien (Soi 5 Jomtien Beach Road). You should have a contract to rent or house book of your property. They will fill in documents for you (50 Baht), will make copies of the contract (50 Baht) and will make 2 pictures (next 50 Baht).
Then you have two options. First - go to the Immigration Office by yourself, wait for their turn to hand over documents and obtain the certificate on the next day. The official rate is 400 Baht.
Second - initially aide said that you are going to get a certificate with them and do not want to go to the office by yourself. Then, for all its services, including the receipt of the certificate they will take 1,000 Baht, and you will receive a document in an hour.
2. Get the Medical Certificate. Going into the first clinic on your way and explain that you need a certificate to make a driver's license. You will pass a test at the doctor and will receive a certificate. Spend 5 minutes of time, and 100 - 200 baht (depending on the clinic).
3. Now you need to make a copy of two pages of the passport - the main page and the page with a valid visa. If you have a drivers license from another country do also copy from it.

DAY 2

If you have a valid driver's license from another country this test will be the only test that you need to pass. If you no have a valid driver's license from another country you will receive a card to pass the computer test.
3. Study of the Traffic Rules in the Kingdom of Thailand. Before any computer test you will examine the "rules of the road in Thailand". It’s includes a three-hour course with movies on English and the study of traffic signs with manuals.
4. The computer test. After spending 3 hours on the study of the Traffic Rules in Thailand, you will walk into the classroom with computers, where you will take the test.
